Utilize innovation and current technologies and the many new media options,

And be innovative in finding new ways to do that…

Utilize innovation to “get on the right trail” to “get to the right stream and current flow”

That is moving in the right direction… to the big “blue ocean” of opportunity…

Blue ocean strategy generally refers to the creation by a company of a new, uncontested market space
that makes competitors irrelevant and that creates new consumer value often while decreasing costs
and emphasizes innovation and initiative.

As opposed to trying to compete in the “Red Ocean Strategy”, the conventional approach to business
of beating competition derived from military strategy.

Be reliable, dependable… predictable in the sense that you can be counted on.

5. Build Your Own Boat… (and, not just a life raft)

… but, a safe, reliable "escape vehicle"…

Noah built the ark before it was raining…
and the work was done on his own time and in addition to his “real job”.

Create something new
A new way to do something old…

Do it better, do it differently, do it relevantly.

6. Sail Away on Your Boat

Do the work and provide the service, solution, or product/productive contribution that you have

Story - The Mexican fisherman

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat
with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American
complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.
The Mexican replied, "Only a little while."

The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish?
The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs.
The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"
The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife,
Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full
and busy life."

The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing
and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several
boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman
you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the
product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and
move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise."

The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?"
To which the American replied, "15-20 years."

"But what then?"
The American laughed and said that's the best part. "When the time is right you would announce an
IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions."
"Millions… Then what?"

The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would
sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings
where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

What is the difference between having a JOB v. doing Meaningful Sustainable Work?

A JOB is voluntarily exchanging your talent, skills, and time to receive income or compensation.

versus Meaning Sustainable Work includes… experiencing and doing work in a different and meaningful way.

Working at jobs, careers, and enterprise businesses in ways that allow those doing the work and
providing special services to experience their work as more motivating, meaningful, or sustainable over
time.

Sustainable work is participating and practicing principles that create potential for experiencing work in
a different way than what has been the old standard.

What was the “old standard”?

…at the turn of the last century, our schools and institutions were designed primarily for perpetuating either
managing or working in factories… that is training of an “upper class” to manage a “lower class” of working
uneducated immigrants… to run factories…

We went from being primarily an agricultural society to being an industrial society…

…and our citizens were trained to stand in line… sit down, shut up… do what we were told… when we could
eat and take breaks… etc…

In many ways we are still functioning that way behaviorally… and especially in how we perceive and approach
work… even now 13 years into the 21st century…

So how do we…
